This year, we’re trying out a new-to-me strain of ‘San Marzano.’ This strain was developed by a breeder using seeds sourced from the USDA gene bank (which is designed for the maintenance of gene diversity and food security). This strain was developed in midcentury Italy for the canning industry. Let’s give it a try!

A Note from the Grower
A good sauce tomato is important to get right. The flavor and meatiness is everything! You may have to chuck a few more of these tomatoes out during the growing season than you might from a hybrid sauce tomato, but because of San Marzano’s high yield and flavor, you’ll get over it.
